Where we stayed : New york City

It was my first time visiting New York. I have heard a lot about it from my friends who have previously visited. Everyone gave me tonnes of advice but I don’t think any of them really managed to prepare me.

The first and most important thing for me was getting the accommodation sorted. I chose to stay in Hotel Giraffe in Manhattan which is just a walking distance away from the Empire state building.

Find it was pretty much straight forward, out yellow cab took us from JFK to the hotel for 55$. I had no expectation of New York accommodation, simply because I have never stayed in any accommodation in the USA before, but somewhere in my mind I imagined it to be similar to London.

I was not wrong. The building of the hotel was very tall, and the view was just what you would expect from a city like New York, and even though it may not be romantic, it is exactly what you want when you arrive there. Surprisingly the room was quite spacious and comfy, I must admit I was expecting it to be much smaller and definitely did not expect a balcony! In the UK you can not exit to the window or the balcony, due to people committing suicides or suing hotels for accidents.

Standing on that balcony was really scary. I don’t think I have ever had a room that up high, it took me a moment to get over it , but once i did I embraced it.

The best thing about this Hotel is everything was really close to everything, 20 minutes walk and we were already on the Time square. Walking around is the best way to get to know the city, but the location is important, I say this because last two days I stayed in Brooklyn and it was really too far to be bothered to come back to Manhattan. Many will choose a cheaper Airbnb over a more expensive hotel in the centre, but the cost you will have on taxi and uber rides will pretty much level with the cost of the hotel in Manhattan.

Hotel giraffe is kind of in a perfect spot. There are many great restaurants around and monuments. We stayed there for 2 nights but managed to do enough to fit in a week.
